"Isn't that what we do with the caravan?" It's like camping, but very fancy camping. Or does a tent have to be involved for it to be proper camping? Rose isn't sure. But it's very close, either way.
"But there's something about a tent, isn't there? The coziness, how close you are to nature, no hard walls around you..."
"No, no, the caravan is totally different. It's too much like a home. Glamping is when you go away from home and do it in a cushy tent like this. Rose, I know you're some kind of ageless space lady, but you don't know how lucky we are to not have mosquitos here."
"Well....a tent can be a home, too. But I think that might be a little too adventurous now that I'm human. That's why I have the caravan!"
The idea of a permanent home here had just never appealed to Rose. There's too much to see and do! Too many sights, too many places, too many Pokemon that only live in specific places. And they're all different each part of the year...
"And I know humans hate mosquitos. They aren't the most polite creature." It is rude to take blood without asking someone first.
"But I'll be glad for you. And it is all very romantic, which makes sense for prom."
"Romantic...yeah." JW wasn't startled exactly but he was suddenly very alert. But not alert enough to be aware of Queenie stretching her huge head down and trying to get more crackers out of his pocket.
"I'm sure the couples here love it!" He says a little loudly. What was this? Was she dropping a hint? Did Rose do hints? He'd been trying to figure it out since she first brought up going to prom at all!
Though maybe not. JW, Rose has observed, isn't exactly what humans would call 'a romantic'. Some people aren't as charmed by all the human trappings of romance. Which are not, she understands, necessary. Just something that many many humans enjoy and engage in.
And that's alright. Really it would be to know. She'd hate to surprise him with some big silly romantic gesture and find out he doesn't like any of that!
Queenie hit paydirt and munched happily, getting horse slobber all down the front of JW's nice suit.
Meanwhile, JW had taken to staring at Rose like a deer in headlights. He would have looked even more the part if he'd had his antlers from home. He could feel his ears getting hot.
"Isn't it? That's what humans who like each other do when they go to prom, isn't it?"
Rose was really sure she'd had this one nailed down. Maybe not? She'd very specifically said they'd go to prom together. That meant a date, as far as she knew. While she doesn't have that much experience, Greg had taught her a great deal and she's learned from watching others.
"You like me!?" JW's voicee climbed higher and higher until it had reached a sort of bird-ish squawk. His eyes were wide and his shoulders hunched up around his ears. He shoved Queenie's head out of the way so he could better see Rose. "Not that--that's a bad thing! I just-- I didn't--Me??"
Another thing Rose thought was obvious. It's hard to miss, in closed quarters all the time. They practically live on top of each other when they're in the caravan, even with how big it is.
JW shook his head rapidly. "No! No, I had no idea! I mean--I'm not--you know." He cupped a hand aside his mouth as though they weren't the only two people there. Not counting the horse. "Conventionally attractive."
The giant lady from space liked him. A stupid smile plastered itself onto his face as things sank in.
"You're--gorgeous! You've gotta know that! You really wanna go around in public with me?"
She can't see any reason he wouldn't be attractive. He has such interesting features! She isn't sure she's ever seen another human who looks quite like him. It's wonderful! And so very different from her. She's all large expanses and very soft curves. JW is sharp and slim. She's always liked that sort of look.
JW sighed. She didn't even know he was ugly. He felt like he kind of had an unfair advantage...but also he was never one to turn down good luck. He thought back to when he'd first arrived, how easily Rose put up with his bullshit. She was just like that, he assumed, but also maybe she had liked him then. Maybe!?
"Don't worry about it..." He shook his head. "Rose, I never knew y'liked me. Ahaha. Wow. Well, I like you a lot. You're probably the kindest person I know. I admire that a lot. It's easy to be nice, but nice and kind are two different things."
"You do!? Shit, I thought I was slick." He snapped his fingers, too flustered to be annoyed at himself. He really had thought he'd been sly about the whole thing. Oh, well!
He pushed up off of Queenie and stumbled his way over to where Rose was sitting. He threw himself down next to her so hard he bounced and flung an arm around her shoulders.
"I will! I will, I will! Hey, date, you wouldn't want a celebratory prom kiss, would you?"
There's a sparkle in Rose's oddly colored eyes as she turns to regard JW. A decidedly flirtatious sparkle. It's a very human thing, but she quite likes kissing. And all those other things in the same general category. It's been a while since she kissed anyone, too.
Actually, it's been a very very long time - in organic years - since she kissed anyone but Greg. It's exciting!
He wasn't bold enough to kiss her on the lips--not on the first date. Since that's what this was. Though it did seem a little silly being so chase after living in close quarters for so long.
Still, JW didn't want to take anything for granted. He hadn't been looking for signs of affection or anything resembling a love language. It would take a little while to figure out which one Rose speaks.
He leaned down and poked her in the cheek with his nose but managed to snag himself an excited kiss.
Rose giggles, closing her eyes briefly for that first little kiss. It's sweet. And she has no real sense of chasteness or anything else. She knows humans can be funny about sex and love, but she's still not entirely sure why. They're wonderful things!
But she's human now, and trying to live like humans do.
She rests her forehead against JW's, smiling, that little sparkle still in her eyes.
"Thanks," JW said for he didn't know what else to say to that. He felt dizzy. This was happening! He never thought he'd like anyone after Gloria. He did occasionally Look at Jack but then he saw the shit he and Jack got themselves into and remembered why he broke up with Horas.
But this was something else entirely!
"You know, I've been dying to find out what a hug from you feels like. You got good arms." His accent clung to his words.

Obviously the former Gem approves of it all.

He slapped his arm to pantomime swatting one.

"Rose, answer me. Am I stupid or is this a date?"

Has she gotten this all wrong?

She still has a lot to learn.
But it seems to be all cleared up now, thank goodness!
"Well, now we have that all straightened out. I hope you can enjoy prom now."
